CORDIERITE
Special composition of some ceramic bodies.
There are no known deposits of natural cordierite; theoretically it would correspond to 39.6% talc, 47% kaolin and 13.4% alumina.
Pastes with this composition have a very narrow vitrification range and are not normally fired in industrial furnaces.
An addition of 20-30% zirconium silicate to these compositions increases the firing range.
They are interesting because of their resistance to thermal shock, which is excellent.
Cordierite pastes are difficult to glaze due to their low coefficient of thermal expansion.
